My Trip to Jordan: A Stop-over at Nebo’s Pearl

on August 1, 2013

Still on our Day 1 of the 3-day Jordan Trip…

After Mount Nebo, we had a stop over at Nebo’s Pearl before going to our itinerary #3: The Baptism Site (Bethany Beyond Jordan).

Nebo’s Pearl is a handicrafts shop that offers traditional crafts, mosaics and Dead Sea products. The moment we went inside, we were offered tea and coffee right away, which is very common in the Arab culture. I asked for coffee.

The guy who welcomed us informed us that the people who work behind those wonderful and amazing masterpieces of mosaic that they are selling are handicapped people. He led us to another room of the shop and I just fell in love with all of those art works I saw. If only I could buy all of them and bring them home…if only they were cheap…

The table I fell in love with…

The guy showed us where some of those talented artists work and how they actually do it. It’s really amazing how they do it. From different kinds of stones that are abundant in Madaba, they will cut and break the stones into pieces and fragments and glue it on the already drawn design. It takes a lot of patience when doing something like this because it takes a real great of time before you can actually see the result of your labor especially when you’re making something as big as a table.

After watching these women work on their individual projects, I decided to check out what I could bring home as a souvenir for myself. Everything was actually quite expensive especially those mosaics that are made of good quality – stones are shiny, cut is perfect. I ended up buying a pot mat in a so-so quality for JOD20 or US$28.24 because that’s the only thing my budget can afford to buy.

The souvenir that I bought

Nina, one of my friends I was with, wanted to buy some Dead Sea products. But the moment we checked out its price, she backed out. Haha! The Dead Sea products they were selling were those of really famous brands so naturally they are quite pricey. The guy asked us to try one of the products they have and I was impressed. You can actually feel how smooth your skin is right after using the product. But again, it’s still pricey so we didn’t buy any of it. 😀

I just took some photos of the other stuff they were selling in the shop before we left for our next agenda.
