My Trip to Jordan: The Baptism Site (Bethany Beyond Jordan)

on August 29, 2013

For the continuation of my Day 1 of the 3-day trip I had in Jordan…

Next to our list is the Baptism site (also known in Arabic as Al Maghtas). This is a very important site to visit for Christians and Catholics like myself.  It has become a major pilgrimage destination in the past few years.

It is not only believed that Jesus Christ was baptized here in the Jordan River by John the Baptist, but also this is the location where all three entities of the Holy Trinity manifested their physical presence to humanity. Thousands of Christians gather every year at the Biblical site of Bethany in January for the Epiphany and Theophany celebrations to commemorate the day of Jesus’ baptism.

We were early at the waiting area where the bus would pick us up while our car driver/guide waits for us the entire time.  Mo was the one who went to the cashier and paid for the entrance fee. When he came back, he brought us this laminated paper with numbers and a pen-looking gadget which is like a pointer and at the same time a guide for the Baptism Site. When you point the tip of this gadget on one of the numbers, a sound will come out of it and talk about a certain place in the site. I was amazed! Haha!

While waiting for the coaster, we had a time to ask Mo about some stuff, even personal stuff.  After a few minutes, more tourists flocked the area and we were the first ones to get into the coaster once it arrived. There was another guide inside the coaster who speaks more than just one language. He asked everyone to listen to him first before we start walking from one place to another, once we have reached the area.

  • Opening Hours: daily from 8am until 6pm in summer and until 4pm in winter time. Last entry is 1 hour before closing.
  • Entrance Fee: 2 JD for Jordanians, 3 JD for Arab nationals and 7 JD (around US$10) for other nationalities.

Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a persistent one. So get a few laughs and do the best you can. Don't have an ideal to work for. That's like riding towards the mirage of a lake.
